Lochan and Misty Faded Away – White-tailed Sea Eagles Disappear
Lochan and Misty Faded Away –
White-tailed Sea Eagles Disappear
Two 37 year olds, Lochan and Misty, have disappeared, from the island of Mull and they are feared to be casualties of age and new comers taking their territory. They are white-tailed sea eagles and famous birds at that. The pair are credited with saving the species in the islands and they had reared 39 chicks, the first in 1986, since they appeared on Mull in the early 1980s. Their fame had spread far and wide and they were featured on the BBC children’s show Blue Peter and BBC nature programme Springwatch. They were the oldest white-tailed sea eagles in Britain.
Nature Red in Tooth and Claw
It seems that age had diminished them and allowed new pair of white-tailed sea eagles to take over their territory and wildlife observers had seen the old stagers fighting with the incomers, including one terrifying fight on the ground with bared talons. The incomers displaced Lochan and Misty from their old nest and recently the body of a white-tailed sea eagle was found on the mainland dirrecly opposite Mull. It is believed by experts to be either Lochan or Misty who had perished in a fight over the sea then washed ashore. The eagles had helped save their species, but were undone by their own success. Locals see it as the end of an era.
Nature Refined
Here though it isn’t the end of an era, but as always a new chapter in the development of James Pirie, as we stride forward in the Internet age, proving as ever if you don’t evolve as a business you will fall by the wayside. But the ruthlessness of nature isn’t reflected in our halls, no we favour a gentler approach to life, with tastefulness and consideration to the top of the heap, not survival of the fittest. And to demonstrate this- take a gander at our lovely new Royal Crown Derby figures proving that nature doesn’t have to be red in tooth and claw. On the contrary they are warm, cosy and moving. My favourite the new hedgehog, called Daffodil. I always like these little beasties, a gardener’s friend.
