Poisson d'Avril – Shock, Horror and Panic on the Streets

Alien Autopsy Carried Out inside Crop Circles

There is a day in the year when the media can’t be trusted and friends will prank you outrageously, yes its Halloween, just kidding its April 1.  It is only in the relatively recent past that hoaxes have become so widespread and prevalent. When in 1938 Orson Welles read H. G. Well’s War of the World’s out on American radio it was supposed to have caused panic in the streets of the USA, but that is a hoax as well.

Urban Myths

The urban myth is that thousands of New Yorkers fled their homes and the streets of the USA were thronged with rubber-neckers trying to catch sight of the invasion first hand.  They had fake radio reports from the US air force and infantry to give that lustre of news. Widespread panic was reported, but never verified and even Hitler was drawn into the debate. (That’s some debate!). The debate was of course largely manufactured by publicists as most of America was listening to a ventriloquist on the other channel,  jings a ventriloquist on the radio!

Even BBC Pranks

Slightly more recently in 1957 the BBC spoofed the nation with a Panorama broadcast about spaghetti trees in Switzerland. The programme showed women carefully picking strands of spaghetti from a tree and laying them in the sun to dry.  This was long before the days of spaghetti hoops and the dish was not widely-eaten in the UK and was considered as an exotic delicacy. What terrible days they must have been for anyone interested in good food. And of course the grandest hoax of all was made into a film with Ant and Dec about Alien Autopsy. It was at the time when X-Files was all the rage on TV and it was a proper put up job by Ray and Gary, producers from London, who did very well out of it.

White Rabbits, White Rabbits, White Rabbits

But there are no put up jobs here, no April Fool’s joke just a firm commitment to quality, price and service.  There are no aliens around the corner and very few of their autopsies taking place in the near area. We hope you have a wonderful April 1st – don’t forget to say “White Rabbits”  three times as the first words you utter in the month to ensure good luck throughout. And check out our brands which are definitely no hoax.
