Andy Gets the Elbow –
Murray in a Tear
The great Scot Andy Murray, tennis world number one, can't serve at the moment and it looks like an elbow tear may jeopardise his clay court season. His brother Jamie says Andy needs to rest and give the elbow time to heal. Andy is out of the British team to play France in the Davis Cup and our hearts are in our mouths as we wait to see how our greatest sportsman recovers from this latest set-back. Andy’s drive to become that world number one last year has exacted a price on his body. He played more tournaments towards the end of last season than any other top player and his body has had its revenge. He was forced out of the Australian open with shingles, a very painful adult version of chickenpox, discovered by his mother in law at the dinner table when he dropped his trews, some meal that must have been, But let’s hope he’s back on the circuit soon.
Hopes on the Shoulders of Others
Meanwhile British hopes for the Davis Cup against France rest on the rather more inexperienced shoulders of Evans and Edmund. It was confirmed Andy will not play any part in the clay-court tie in Rouen. The British team is made up of the same four players who defeated Canada 3-2 in Ottawa last month: Kyle Edmund, Dan Evans, Jamie Murray and Dominic Inglot. The winners of next week’s tie progress to a September semi-final against Serbia or Spain, who battle it out indoors on a hard court in Belgrade. The home side get to choose the surface and the venue.
Paris Beckons
So for the moment it is a stay at home Andy as he isn’t scheduled to play again for a while. He is entered for the Monte Carlo Masters, which starts April 17-23, but even that may come too soon. After that next scheduled tournament is the Madrid Masters, from May 8. He reached the final there last year. It hoped that Andy’s recovery will be sufficient to help him win the French Open for the first time. One of his major goals at the start of this year was to finally triumph on the tough clay in Paris. So far it has been close, but no cigar.
