Scottish Kindness Defeats Nazi Sympathies-
A seasonal Thought – Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot
Should Auld Acquaintance be forgot,
and never thought upon;
The flames of Love extinguished,
and fully past and gone:
Is thy sweet Heart now grown so cold,
that loving Breast of thine;
That thou canst never once reflect
On auld lang syne.
Nazi Sees Error of His Ways
A former German SS soldier, Heinrich Steinmeyer who was once an ardent Nazi, has left £384,000 in his will to the Perthshire village where he was held as a prisoner of war during World War Two.
The soldier was 19 when he was captured in France and held in the PoW camp at Cultybraggan by Comrie. He was a committed National Socialist or Nazi when he was captured, but he saw the other side when the kindness and friendship of ordinary Scottish people warmed his heart.
Lasting Scottish Friendships
Mr Steinmeyer was held at Cultybraggan in Comrie along with about 4,000 other prisoners. After the war, he visited Comrie and made lasting friendships in the village and even stayed a little after the war working in the area. He died aged 90 in 2013 and bequeathed the money to the village in appreciation meaning for the money to help the Comrie elderly. His will stated: "Herewith, I would like to express my gratitude to the people of Scotland for the kindness and generosity that I have experienced in Scotland during my imprisonment of war and hereafter."
