Treasure Trove of Our Forefathers–

At the Third Beep You Have found £2 million

An amateur historian from Ayrshire had had a windfall of nearly £2 million after finding a 9th century Viking hoard.  This was after first discovering a Viking arm ring, one of those decorative jobbies denoting status as a warrior.  This was a mere precursor to the absolute hoard he later found. The beeping of his metal detector in 2014 had served him well.

Lots of Lolly

Now when you find treasure trove it isn’t straightforward anywhere in the UK, it basically goes to the crown and they give you a value of the treasure settled on by the treasure trove unit on behalf of the Queen’s and Lord Treasurer’s Remembrancer . A great word that remembrancer. Well the remembrancer offered £1.98m which I’m sure was gleefully accepted.

Scottish History Enhanced

But the find isn’t just about money experts say it is of “unparallelled significance and will change historians’ understanding of Scottish history.” Well there you go then. The hoard goes to the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, and they have six months to pay the detectorist. It will no doubt fund a bigger and better metal detector for the history mad hoard searcher.

Much New to Tell about Our Forefathers

This hoard is special and originates from across Europe and even from Asia. It’s not just gold, silver and jewels, it is materials and leathers all beautifully worked. The Galloway group founded to save the Viking hoard would like the find to be displayed in the southwest of Scotland close to where they were discovered, but much it seems will go to the capital’s museums.
