Have You Got a Million or Two to Spare?

Then I have a House for You

A castle, one of the oldest houses in Scotland and outside Montrose in Angus, dating back to the late 13th century is up for sale. For a while it housed the heart of Robert the Bruce and here Mary Queen of Scots plotted against the English queen Elizabeth I. The castle is called “The Craig” and it has been continuously occupied throughout its existence with records dating from the 13th century. The castle is on the market for offers over £1.65 million. A snip I say!

History in Every Room

The estate agent’s blurb says that in 1535, James Beaton, Archbishop of St. Andrews granted the lands of Craig to David Wood, one of James V's closest advisors and later his Comptroller and Coroner. Then in 1620 Archbishop John Spottiswood granted them to James Carnegie. And so on... It is all so very historic. Legend has it that James Stuart the Elder, the Old Pretender to the throne, spent his last night in Scotland at Craig Castle before his French exile.

Fortified Is Best

The house was fortified at a time when neighbours might come calling to steal and ravage and therefore it has gun loops, drum towers, wines cellar and the near compulsory high walls to discourage unwanted visitors. But for those it welcomes it has 6 bedrooms inside and a couple of 2 bedroom cottagers for the valued old retainers. Should you be feeling claustrophobic in a mere 6 bedrooms and 7 reception rooms there are nearly 21 acres of grounds to lose the butler in.
