The Missing Link –

Ancient Egyptian Smellies Box Whole Again

The world of Scottish museums seems to move slowly, but it does get there in the end. A beautiful Ancient Egyptian perfume box which was donated to National Museum of Scotland some 160 years ago didn’t have it all its bits. The box and some pieces of it were separated at some distant time in the past, but now they have been re-united.  The box which is 3,400 years old was the property of the Ancient Egyptian royal family and donated by an eminent Victorian .

Ebony and Ivory

The ancient perfume box is made of made of cedar, ebony and ivory and decorated with gold. The missing bits were found by an art dealer who sold them on to the National Museum of Scotland for some £20,000. Expert opinion is that the  box was made for the grand-daughter of Pharaoh Amenhotep II, who ruled from about 1427-1401BC. The box is supposed to be one of the finest examples of ancient Egyptian decorative woodwork and it features a dwarf with lion-like features who was a god called Bes. The piece was designed as a holder for Amenhotep II’s granddaughter’s perfumes and is extremely rare. The box will go on display in March.
