Queensferry Crossing Nears Completion-
Third Bridge to Span Forth Shockingly on Schedule
Now I am used to Scottish transport bad news stories so it was with good cheer that I heard that despite recent storms the new Forth Road Bridge is in time for delivery, as they say in May. It is a bridge sir not a letter; by Jove they have made a minced meal of the language. And by the way I thought they were going to ‘deliver’ originally in January 2016, mm! Construction of the £1.35 billion new bridge, which will be the third to span the Forth at Queensferry, began in June 2011. I recently watched a BBC 4 documentary on the building of the original road bridge which was completed in 1964. My goodness those boys were heroes. I love old super 8 footage and the like, so I sat fascinated and watched the late night programme with a cuppa.
Longest in the World
The new bridge will be the longest three-tower, cable-stayed bridge in the world. It is also the largest to feature cables that cross mid-span. The crossing will hover 207m above high tide. And as they always measure everything in double-decker buses, that’ll be 48 buses high. It will tower 50 metres over the existing Forth Road Bridge.
Last Lap – Final Stages Now
The final stage of work is to ballast the structure and adjust the supporting cables before the last span of bridge is laid in place. It is a veritable triumph of the human spirit I say, even if they do use the word ‘deliver’ to describe its opening. So come May it will be a blessed relief to all the travellers in the region. The old Forth Road Bridge is a marvellous old lady, but she is sadly showing her age.
