The Gallery Strikes Back –

A New Hope for Garden Art Gallery

As you might remember I wrote about the likely closure of Inverleith House a contemporary art gallery in Edinburgh  and well it seems the outcry from the public, stars of the art world and Hollywood heavy hitters may have swayed the guardians of the gallery.

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) decision prompted a public protest and was queried by Creative Scotland, the arts agency which had recently awarded it £80,000. The Ice Man Val Kilmer and Jedi warrior Ewan McGregor, the musicians Jools Holland and Fran Healy, and shed loads of Turner prize winners were among signatories to a letter of protest. Getting on for 1,000 people took part in a demonstration railing against the closure.

We Shall Overcome?

After this worldwide pressure  RBGE  somewhat relented, at least for the moment, saying  it would establish a working group with Creative Scotland and the Scottish government  to see which way the land lies for the future and maybe if you were cynical kick it into the long grass until Hollywood finds another toy.
