Victorian Trains Faster than ScotRail –

Her Majesty is Not Amused

You would think in the age of the high speed internet, hybrid cars and flashy gizmos that a simple thing like travelling by train would be faster now. Steam has gone and we have the glories of diesel, I say that tongue firmly in cheek – unless you are a diesel buff. Those aforesaid steam locomotives were able to make the journey - regularly on time- between Edinburgh and Dundee in a mere 57 minutes. That is some 7 minutes faster than the current timetable that many mark as ‘fiction’ anyway.

Steam Wins Versus Diesel Do

If you wanted to go to Perth in the 19th century the journey took a soot covered 65 minutes and now with progress it is up to 75 minutes. That takes talent to achieve I say. There are some reasons, or if you like excuses, for this apparent lack of speed and they are to do with the number of new stations on the line since Victorian times. And the direct rail route from Edinburgh to Perth via Dunfermline, Kinross and Glenfarg was closed in 1970 to make way for the M90 motorway.
