Whisky Galore for Whisky Maestro –

Job Opportunity for Lover of the Scottish Winter

Now not many job ads come with the kind of flourish and warning about our weather as does that for a new distillery on one of Scotland’s most beautiful small islands Raasay. Raasay is a 25 minute ferry ride from the Isle of Skye and it has only 170 inhabitants.  Raasay is famous for being the birthplace of John McKay, first piper to Queen Victoria. The new distillery will be the first legal one ever to be on the island, which has a history of illicit whisky making, according to the owners of the new legal still who plan to build this and another  one across Scotland.

Is Island Life for You?

The tiny island is only four miles long and 3 miles wide but its rugged landscape is very diverse with loads of wildlife. However, no fair weather distiller is required as the notorious island winters come with a health warning and the job isn’t for the faint hearted.  At the moment the island’s website is up for development so you won’t be gleaning much from that, but the good weather pictures are stunning.  As they say ‘the lucky candidate will have a formal qualification and practical experience in the field - sorry though, years of necking back the amber nectar is not going to cut it.’ Whoops and here was me packed and ready to go.

Dream Job

Now we can’t all get dream jobs making the aforesaid amber nectar, but we can sit beside the fire at night and enjoy a dram and think about not being stranded on a tiny island 25 miles from a larger community and accessible only by ferry. So this evening I will count my blessings and raise a glass to the successful candidate who makes the magic potions for me and the world to enjoy.
