Row Over Display of Viking Treasure-
Detectorists Trove Now Source of Controversy
Avid readers of this blog will know, particularly as it’s the last writte, I have already written about the huge Viking hoard discovered by a history mad detectorist with his metal detector in Dumfries and Galloway and that I pointed out a row may be brewing about where to exhibit the trove, well the expected brouhaha has hit with a vengeance. The head of Scotland’s national museum has been under heavy criticism by locals opposed to the capital’s custody of the trove. It is all getting heated, but first the National museum has to raise the £1.98m cash to buy the treasure from the Crown.
Give the Hoard a Home
As soon as the 1,000-year-old objects were found near Kirkcudbright in 2014, excited locals organised a campaign to raise the money. All so that they could then buy the treasure and show the hoard in a gallery in the town. However, the Queen’s and Lord Treasurer’s Remembrancer awarded the hoard of more than 100 priceless items to the national collection in Edinburgh, provoking an immediate response from campaign groups hoping to galvanise local interest in history and rebuild civic pride in the region. Indeed, questions were asked in parliament. Campaigners still support the council’s effort “to give the hoard its rightful home in Kirkcudbright”. The complete hoard will be loaned again to the gallery in Kirkcudbright during the refurbishment of Edinburgh’s Museum of Scotland, which is planned for the near future, while parts of the collection will be offered in a long-term loan to the area. But many feel this is a sop to local interest which may be cast aside later.
