End of the Line for Bonnets-

Police Change Caps It All

I sometimes think that those who make decisions for us  on a national scale either have to seek out the back of an envelope or the Screwfix catalogue, because that is where I expect Police Scotland got their latest inspiration from in choosing the new unisex head gear for Scotland’s cops. It seems that different hats for male and female officers are to be phased out.  The phrases of the moment are ‘gender neutral’ and ‘discrimination free’ and that is the way that Police Scotland is determined to go, fair enough. Now the force, not the one from Star Wars, has told staff that it plans to introduce unisex headwear over a period of time. For as long as I can remember the men have worn a peaked cap marked with the force’s badge and a black and white chequered band, while women wear what is called bowler hat. Now that is a bit formal for the force now and uniform rules have been relaxed to allow officers to wear police baseball caps for all duties.  Normally it is the glamorous sections like the firearms squads who wear them. If they want these officers can get these so called bump hats from £5.99 from the aforementioned Screwfix, but I expect with all the professional expertise at their disposal Police Scotland will get them for just several multiples of that.

So They Were Called Bowlers- Who Knew?

It was death by memo for the old fashioned hats and the email that announced the change was entitled: “Wearing of gender-neutral hats.” So while they scour the nation for designs for the new hat, The Chief Constable has set up a working group,  meanwhile officers can wear baseball hats, providing I suppose they don’t wear them backwards like discontented American youth. A bump cap by the way is like a baseball cap but includes a lightweight protective layer to guard against scrapes and knocks and closing times at the pub.

No Bump Hat Needed
