If You Want to Get Noticed Go Sculptural –
Artist’s Tribute to Nature
These days if you want to get noticed you go sculptural. Every man and his dog has heard of The Angel of the North near Gateshead, which is as tall as four stacked double-decker buses: Strange how we measure everything in buses. Take for example the six buses highs sculptures of the Kelpies the largest equine sculpture in the world. Located between Falkirk and Grangemouth, it was created as a space for the communities in the Falkirk area to come together. The Kelpies are 30-metre-high horse-head sculptures depicting kelpies those shape-shifting water spirits next to the Forth and Clyde Canal. The massive art work was designed by Scots sculptor Andy Scott and was completed in October 2013. Now the immensely talented Mr Scott has unveiled his giant bear which is a tribute to John Muir, the David Attenborough of his day, although Muir has the benefit of being born in Scotland.
Take a Gander at the Bear
The steel sculpture of a bear tribute to Muir can now been seen in Dunbar, East Lothian and this time it stands at five metres high that’s just one bus tall. But that’s a mighty big bear! John Muir is known as "John of the Mountains" and "Father of the National Parks” and he was a huge figure in the USA at the turn of the nineteenth century, dying in the year the First World War started. The Sierra Club in America takes its inspiration from him and in these increasingly environmentally aware times, what a fine figure to inspire his home nation, and the rest of the world of course too. Muir was a big figure in making Yosemite a national park, which finally happened in 1890. The year that James Pirie was established you might just remember. And the comparison with David Attenborough is a good one because it was through media that Muir wielded his influence, but writing then not making great telly programmes. John Muir was born in Dunbar in 1838 and the giant sculptural bear is symbolic of his travels through America's wild places. If you want to take in the sights it is located off the A1, near the Spott Roundabout in Dunbar.
Want to Be Sculpturally Significant?
Now for the first time me and the missus have invested in a couple of mantle sized pieces of sculpture for the lounge and I have to say they are grand. And if you want to go all sculptural yourself then we here at James Pirie have been listening and now you can add to the grandeur of your living room, or give a present to someone eminent in your life with a gift from the Richard Cooper foundry. They work with some immense talents and you should check out the five star rated bronze called Equestrian Grace by Michael Simpson which is a limited edition of 150. As a rarity it comes with its own certificate of authenticity, can’t say fairer than that. It truly is a wonderful gift, or a super piece of art to adorn any home.
