Budget Airlines and the Fear of Flying-
Weddings and Hiccups
As I type this it is on my wedding anniversary and it has been four happy years. Yes, you guessed it second time around, but it seems easier to get it right when you are bit older. We were married by someone the missus went to school with, in fact she had stolen the registrar’s boyfriend way back when, but it all went smoothly. Not surprisingly the scars had healed as they were both only thirteen years old at the time and the romance had been conducted on one of those rural bus rides home after school every day. After the ceremony we flew to France for a month in Carcassonne, but the budget flight was a disaster. About ten minutes into the flight we heard a giant clang from the airplane and the captain then announced that we had mechanical trouble and were heading back to the airport of origin. After a series of calls to the cabin crew by the pilot our stewardess was seen crying in panic just in front of us. It was very unnerving, especially after we landed with fire engines in attendance and the captain got out and said sorry to us all. I had seen him on the ground and he was so scruffy I assumed he was a baggage handler. Suffice it to say my new wife wasn’t entirely pleased with how it was working out so far. In fact that evening in Carcassonne we had our first row ever, as the tension caught up with us.
Champagne Tastes and Dodgy Dealings
That put us off budget airlines for quite a while and we took the stupendous decision that when we went back to the Aude region later that year for a longer break we would go in my old Jeep. And that ladies and gentleman is a very, very long way in a twenty year old car. But it did the biz and we had a lovely time and it came with benefits. We were able to ram an enormous numbers of bottles of wine into the cavernous space of the Jeep and we could spend our time popping round vineyards and trying samples of the local brew. Unfortunately now, four years later there is not a bottle left, but should you ever go there I can recommend Cremant de Limoux. They invented the champagne process there, but a naughty monk Dom Pérignon or somebody like him stole the secret of the second fermentation and took it north. The Cremant is still spectacular though.
