Auld Reekie is Top of the Pile –

But in a Bad Way

If you live in the nation’s capital you will know that traffic in Edinburgh is appalling and officially the worst in the UK. It doesn’t come close to the most congested city in the world which is Mumbai where drivers spend 65 per cent longer on their journeys than they would without traffic. But unhappy old Edinburgh is ranked 27th worst city in the world while overcrowded London is ranked 40th worst out of the 403 cities studied. London may have a name for gridlocked streets packed with stationary buses and taxis but it is Edinburgh that is the champ. Did you know that journeys in Scotland’s capital take on average 40 per cent longer than they would if roads were quieter and that in rush hour traffic, drivers will take nearly twice as long compared to when traffic is light.  And if you want to be exact it is 80% longer. And if you want to be even more exact the average journey takes an extra 24 minutes.

Every Resident a Potential Loser

Of the top worst traffic cities in the world the UK has 9 clunkers in the top 100 cities for congestion, not a record anyone will be bragging about I bet. Although Manchester, Glasgow and Portsmouth have seen congestion levels improve and delays lessen just a bit. It makes the town planners itchy to meddle with this dire state of affairs and we will see low emission zones and all kinds of traffic management projects and a possible extension of the tram system and free bus schemes.  It is said that traffic in Edinburgh costs every driver an average of £1,219 in lost productivity and increased accident levels. I don’t know about you but that sounds like a lot of a loss.
