 Now I was looking up the oldest records on the internet after an 81-year-old grandmother became the oldest person to cycle the length of Britain and what did I find that the oldest record shop in the world is in Cardiff and was established four years after James Pirie in 1894. It is amazing how you can get misdirected and absorbed in something completely different by accident when browsing. It seems the shop’s original location was in Queens Arcade Cardiff, where the shop specialised in the sale of phonographs, wax phonograph cylinders and shellac phonograph discs. Ah those were the days, no Spotify then, Sweden was a quiet agricultural place not home to internet monsters.  And the oldest marathon runner ever it seems was Fauja Singh who completed his last long distance competitive race in Hong Kong at the age of 101 years old. I saw him interviewed on a TV show by that nice  Dr Michael Mosley.

But back to the fantastic granny from Stranraer in Dumfries and Galloway, who set out on May 30 from Land’s End and reached John O’Groats twenty three days later. She took up the challenge in memory of her three children, who died in their forties. The canny granny raised more than £50,000 for a well known charity. She decided sitting at home was not the answer to life’s setbacks and she got on her bike. Of course 81 isn’t considered much of an age these days, though her achievement is undimmed, and the oldest person ever was Jeanne Calment (1875–1997) of France, who lived to the age of 122 years and 164 days. They even had her birth certificate!
