Andy Murray Renews the Auld Alliance –

But Serena Tie-up May lead to Success

From its beginning in 1295 to 1560 the Auld Alliance was the bedrock of relations between France and Scotland and now Sir Andy Murray has temporarily joined forces with Pierre-Hugues Herbert the French former World number 2 and a 5 times doubles Grand Slam winner to build on his success with Feli Lopez at Queens Club. All looked well at first and the Saltire and the Fleur du Lys stormed their first match after a little wobble in the first set, but became unstuck in the second round when they encountered another man mountain, but this time from Croatia what do they feed these guys on? Luckily Sir Andy has credit in the bank with multi, multi Grand Slam winner Serena Williams, as Andy is a well known and outspoken advocate for women’s equality as well as a genuine all round great guy.

Ending in a Kiss

So their first match was garlanded with success and it was played in great good humour, it might have been different if they lost of course, and everything ended with a peck on the cheek for all concerned.  Between Serena and Andy they have 26 Grand Slam singles titles and their combined firepower was too much for Mies and Guarachi as they won in one hour and 16 minutes. Serena says she was so intrigued by this combo that she wanted to watch the match back on TV as she felt that she missed some of the atmosphere by just playing in it. They will meet 14th seeds Fabrice Martin and Raquel Atawo in the second round next week which will be more of a test for the newly formed duo. But every time I watch Andy I have to scratch my head and remind myself that only 5 months ago he had hip surgery of a very major kind. That he is pain free is marvellous, that he is playing to a high standard already is near miraculous. Well done Sir Andy!
