Oh You Have No Gas, Shame!

If you live in the Falkirk area then you may have had a chilly week due to a gas network failure. Hundreds of engineers are visiting homes in the area as part of a major operation to tackle the problem. Since Sunday thousands of people have spent the nights without heat in freezing temperatures after failure on the Sunday morning. For those considered vulnerable, old folks, those with children and the long term sick have been loaned electric heaters and portable cookers. Some 14 schools and nurseries in the area were closed. All in all 8,000 homes were affected and it’s a long job because every house much be visited individually. As I am writing 5,000 have been reconnected, leaving 3,000 households in the cold.

Compo, But No Last of the Summer Wine

More than 250 engineers were sent door-to-door to turn off gas supplies at the meter for safety reasons.  The gas supplier warned that some homes could be without gas supplies until the weekend in what they called the worst-case scenario.  And remember if someone knocks at your door during the outage remember to check their ID as all their engineers, without exception, carry photo ID badges. Among the bad news is a chink of light as customers will get compensation for the time they were without their gas supply. Over 24 hours without gas and you will receive £30 compensation per household for each complete 24-hour period you had no gas. This compensation is paid through your supplier and will appear as a credit on your next bill. They are also dishing out an additional £30 as general compo. You might have to wait up to 5 weeks for it though.
