If I Had a Hammer-

Sir Andy’s Grueleathon

Wow well I’ve been watching a gruelling film about Andy Murray and his fight with injury and it is brutal. Especially the operation scene where he gets his new metal coated hip joint and they put it in with a hammer. Ouch! But as always what we get when we take a closer look at the Great Scot is a complex picture of both a warrior type and an argumentative old softie. He film stretches back into the mists of time and covers his growing up, relationship with Jamie, which is pretty close and the events of his childhood that include his parents divorce a year after the tragedy of Dunblane.  It all makes my own struggles with injuries as I get older look a bit less serious than I figured they were. So far I’ve had severe tennis elbow, out for 12 months; a grade 3 hamstring tear out for 3 months, plantar fasciitis out for 6 weeks: An all since 2015. Before that I didn’t play tennis and just ran to keep fit. Back then I never seemed to get injured, but tennis is a brutal sport on the body if you play it hard.

Warrior Athlete and All Round Softie

Sir Andy was surprised at the goodbye video played on court after his defeat at the 2019 Australian Open – because he hadn’t thought he said he was retiring. In the film you can see the torment he was going through at the time when the end was nigh. The hip injury hadn’t got better despite an operation, lots of injection and some stuff that looks like it was from science fiction. He was in pain from the moment he got up to the moment he went to bed. We had quite a few scenes of this brave warrior in tears, his face riven with disappointment and pain. And we were treated to Andy being endlessly pummelled on the treatment table and like many a Scot trying to sort out everything through hard work and diligence. He then had the abyss of the Australian Open and after he set up a trip to go under the surgeon’s knife and hammer as a soon as he was back home. It all seems to be working so far and Sir Andy won him first ATP title in Antwerp in November and took part in the Davis Cup event in Madrid. He became a father shortly after Antwerp with a bouncing baby boy. So it may not all be over for this brave, complicated, super athlete and true gentleman. The baby is already 500/1 to win Wimbledon.
