After the Snow Comes a Polar Bear Cub-
First this Century
We knew she had been born in December, but we knew little else as the camera in the polar bear’s den had been dislodged by the bears sometime before. All that was known was the sound of high pitched mewling, that’s a terrific old word isn’t it? The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland has been very forward in announcing the arrival with pictures of the newborn cub.
Teeny Tiny Thing
Mother Victoria took advantage of the snow to pop outside and have a roll around in the white stuff and everyone knew the cub wouldn’t be long after. Victoria has been living off her fat reserves for four months and so she’ll be a while getting back into bamboo. The cub was born blind and teeny tiny only 12in (30cm) long and weighing about the same as a guinea pig. They become sighted about the month mark, growing quickly on mum’s fat rich milk. The father Arktos will be kept separate from the cub for a long while yet, as they can’t be trusted too much near youngsters, even their own.
Size of a Terrier
It was 1992 when the UK had it last polar bear cubs when twins were born at a zoo in Yorkshire. The new cub is the size of a highland terrier now and will need lots of peace and quiet to continue growing. Victoria was born in Germany and this is her second cub, the last born over ten years ago before she came to Scotland. It is a thrilling time for the zoo and its visitors who will be able to see the as yet unnamed cub, I hope it isn’t something like Cubby McCubface.
Good News Indeed!
But we also have lots of good news at the moment as well and just as the polar bear is the pride of Scotland so is this lovely Caithness Glass paperweight Pride of Scotland - the thistle. It’s a smashing thing and would make an ideal present for someone you love.
