Jack Once Again Top Name in the Nation
For the tenth year running north of the Border the champion male name is Jack. Among babies born in Scotland in 2017 it is by far the most popular. School rooms must be full of confusion in these times when the teacher calls ‘Jack’ a veritable forest of hands must shoot up. Jack now rivals the previous champion David which was the leading choice for boys from 1980-89. I’m still fond of the older names like James, I wonder why. James by the way was down at third beaten by Oliver.
Pink for a Girl?
For the lassies and for the second year Olivia was the most popular choice for baby girls in 2017. The once derided as old fashioned Emily claimed the runner-up position. Lewis remained in fourth for boys, a name I gave to one of mine. Noah and Logan were fifth and sixth while Harris rose six places to seventh. Alexander and Leo were eighth and ninth and Harry was tenth, but I reckon with a royal wedding next May it might make a comeback.
New Births
For girls, Isla was third, and Sophie fell one place to fourth while Jessica rose two places to fifth. Amelia remained sixth and in 2018 we will likely add an Amelia to our family, the middle of March i think. Ava was seventh and Ella was eighth. There were 25,384 boys and 23,935 girls registered as births in the Scottish nation.
