Irn-Bru Made from Lighter Girders?

The Future Has Less Sugar in It

2018 will see the first change to the highly secret recipe first made in 1901 by AG Barr as legislation forces down the sugar content in our drinks. As we all know the sugary nectar is “made from girders” so they’ll have to be lighter weight girders now I expect. I hear that there will only be half of the sugar in the future in Scotland’s favourite ‘girder’ based soft drink and this has caused panic buying of the original recipe bottles and stockpiling against a future that is more sugar free. Indeed there is a ‘Hands Off Our Irn-Bru’ which credits the famous drinks with mystical powers in aiding recovery from a hang-over.

A Nation’s Habits

The drinks maker of Irn-Bru says that most people will not taste the difference when the fizzy drink’s reduced-sugar recipe is introduced, but it hasn’t allayed the near panic in the shops about the 116 year old soft drink that is a staple of the nation’s drinking habits. The sugar tax is due to be introduced in April of this year and no petition can really save the drink as it was without heaping cost on the consumer. Irn-Bru’s sugar content will be reduced from 8.5 teaspoons per can to four, going from just under 140 calories to about 65, which is like the salt reduction we saw in processed foods over the last few years. It is all about saving us from ourselves, if that makes sense as we get larger and more unhealthy north of the border. I’m not sure it will be popular though.
