No More Tears for Clan Buchanan –
Centuries Long Search Over
I don’t know about you but we have been gripped and I mean gripped by the Sony TV series Outlander based on the Diana Gabaldon's historical time travel series set around the Rising of 1745. We are waiting on tenterhooks for the next series as production company Starz has confirmed there are two more in the pipeline. I do hope the actors still enjoy doing it. Indeed the series has helped Scotland by attracting even more visitors to the cities and glens. And so I was interested to hear that a friend’s clan has now got itself a chief after a deal of time, in fact over 300 years. The ancient clan of Buchanan has a new chieftain and he will henceforth be known as ‘The Buchanan.’ This has all been upheld by the Lord Lyon King of Arms, the head of Lyon court, which regulates Scottish heraldry. So there you go.
From Time Immemorial
It has lain unused since 1681when chieftain John Buchanan died without a male heir. Despite which there is a thriving community of Buchanan clansmen, clanswomen and septs around the world. Proving the lineage has taken almost as long as the time travelling hero of Outlander has taken to find his lady love Claire Randall. Clan Buchanan can trace its line back to the early 11th century, when an ancestor received lands around Loch Lomond from Malcolm II for services in fighting the Danes. Malcolm II was the grandfather of the real-life Macbeth. Clan Buchanan Society had for many years flown a banner at the Highland games, which featured a lion rampant with tears of sorrow to represent the sadness of clansmen without a chief. They can remove the tears now.
A Proud Tradition
James Pirie can trace it origins back only as far as 1890, but for a retailer that’s a pretty long time I reckon and we are proud upholders of a tradition too. And we keep alight the legend of the flower of Scotland, the thistle which was first adopted when Clan Buchanan first was given lands by Malcolm. Why just type thistle into the search feature on the web site and you will be inundated with great gift ideas. Like the Scottish Thistle Barrel tumblers. This lovingly hand-made set is a joy to hold and behold and this classic design with its distinctive diamonds and Scottish Thistle design is on special too.
