Cleg Nuisance Abounds

The long spell of warm weather has seen the cleg or horsefly biting more people than ever and it is a bite you should take seriously as the bites can become infected  and require a trip to the docs or casualty. And it’s all the fault of a summer that has been warmer with mor sunshine and less dreich. As people spend more time in the sun and expose more skin they stand a greater chance of being bit by these horrible beasties.  It may well be too that with the dry weather cleg numbers are up, oh lucky us I say.

Midges Retreating?

And of course along with the bad news comes some good news which is that the dreaded Highland biting midges are having a bad time with the dry weather and not every outing is guaranteed to be ruined by mad biting clouds of midges. Hurray! You see Midge breed in wet places. Midges and a lot of other aquatic insects won't be doing so well while the weather is dry.  It seems that insect repellent and loose clothing are an effective way of enjoying the clement weather, but I’m not sure that midges will ever be repelled by anything short of TNT.

Maintain Your Cool
