St Andrews Now Has Its Own Scotch –

160 Wait Is Over

St Andrews as you know was the birthplace of James Pirie when James a local baker tired of rising at 4am everyday and went into the fine glass and collectibles we know today. That was in 1890 when he furnished the mansions and town villas of fashionable Victorian St Andrews.  But what no one could offer was a dram made in St Andrews itself. Because distilling the amber nectar had fallen into disuse in the town some 40 years before. But now thanks to local enterprise the production of scotch has come to St Andrews again. The first of the new whiskies have now been released and I am waiting with bated breath to try them.  The distillers are based in Guardbridge.

First Since 1860

The last distillery in  St Andrews was the Seggie Distillery owned  by the Haig family and it closed its doors in 1860 and the new distillery is on the very same site as the old one. The new whiskies were laid down in 2012 and the talented team that did it are proud to break the 160 year jinx on the production of Scotland’s national drink. They have released a  limited edition range of 20cl bottles called the ‘Hip Flask’ series and there are only 3,800 of new bottles released in seven single malt whisky expressions. I’ll be printing out the article to leave under the wife’s pillow I can tell you. Our anniversary is this month on the 9th!
