How Many Relatives Do You Have? –
New Survey Suggests Many More than You Think
Now I don’t know about you, but I come from a fairly small family, just and my sister growing up, but with the usual raft of cousins off in the distance. My mum was one of five, but my dad’s only sister never had children. So I was surprised to find out that Scotland's population leads the UK with more living cousins than anyone else. And I mean more living cousins with a survey suggesting those in the nation will have 21,000 living relatives. Now that’s not relatives that you’ll see on a daily basis and they’ll be scattered throughout the world, but these are up to eighth cousins. Yes you heard it eight times distant from a regular cousin in one of those calculations that see how close to the line of succession you are away from the British throne, a million miles away in my case!
Relativity Theory?
Most people in the UK have more than 16,000 living relatives and of course they are nearly 100% unknown to them. The average person has 16,895 eighth cousins. But folks in Scotland have the most living connections, with an average of 21,000 cousins, and that’s a blast. Now if you were to try and track them all down that would be the work of a lifetime and cost you a fair few bob in Christmas cards.
