It’s Halloween, but Our Prices Aren’t Scary
As you all know the 31st is my son’s birthday, oops sorry, you didn’t know that, but it’s Halloween and the day of mischief. In fact that’s what we used to call it when I was a lad, Mischief Night. And woe betide any adult who had mortally offended us, especially if we had an egg or two. It’s the day before All Saints Day which is a very special day in the Christian calendar when goodness is set to prevail, so naturally enough the day before this must be given to Old Nick, or the Devil for his own use. Surprisingly enough my son’s name is Nick, so perhaps Halloween was the best day for him to be born anyway.
Some say that Halloween is part of the Celtic Harvest festival Samhain, but really that may be struggling a bit, as the night before holy days was meant for vigils and no bigger vigil would there be if the day before was the day of the devil. Irish and Scottish immigrants took a lot of what we know of Halloween customs to North America in the middle of the 19th century and of course the highly consumer focussed US culture was bound to adopt these as a big money spinners. Here in these isles the day is a mere hiccup compared to that mega monster of Halloween in North America. There are whole blocks devoted to scaring the unwary, who have naturally paid for the privilege.
