Invented in St Andrews -Seagull Insurance and More
As a coastal dweller I am fully aware of the ferocity of seagulls. My next door neighbour has a sign in their house saying: “I’m as happy as a seagull with a stolen chip.” Gulls are both elegant and super flyers, inspiration for the iconic Spitfire war plane, but they are also sometimes a darn nuisance. Recently they disrupted Royal mail deliveries by dive bombing posties delivering letters, but now there is a fight back. And that is “Seagull Insurance.” A St Andrews café, remember, James Pirie was founded there in 1890, has set up a toastie insurance against voracious, aggressive gulls. For a quid you can insure your delicious snack against theft by thieving sea-going avians. The idea is catching on and a food truck owner on the Isle of Man has jumped onto the band wagon and is also offering “Seagull Insurance” to the customers who buy his burgers, fish and fries.
The St Andrews café is in dive bomb alley and up to 30 customers a day were having their toasties nicked by the gulls. The selfie is partly to blame, as social media pictures mean holding up the snack to photograph it which allow the seagulls that moment of opportunity that airborne thieves just wait for. The toasted sandwich shack is so popular customers sometimes have to queue for an hour and the seagulls can lie in wait for unsuspecting tourists to snatch the delicious morsels. My cousin Jools makes it the first place she visits when in St Andrews. The owners felt obligated to replace stolen toasties, but it cost a mint. So in a moment of inspiration the owner came up with, “Seagull Insurance!” They had tried everything else, flying predator kites, bird spikes, noises! But none of it worked, a gull even swooped and stole a baby Barbie doll from a child.
So as you can see St Andrews the town and more particularly James Pirie of St Andrews is the place for great ideas and great offers with customers at the forefront of our efforts . We might not have invented Seagull Insurance, but we have a mighty fine line in Grand Summer Sales, with new lines added to it this week.
