The Pound in Your Pocket

Glasgow Has a New Currency

It’s been years since that phrase was coined by Prime Minister Harold Wilson and we all take it for granted that we all have the same currency in our handbag or wallet, but an enterprising group have set up a local currency the Govenhill Pound. It follows the launch of local currencies in the south, in Brixton, Bristol and Totnes. It is designed to keep money inside a community. The Govenhill Pound design is inspired by the tiles at the local swimming baths and features writing in English, Urdu, Slovakian and Chinese, the most commonly used languages in that district. Well we here hope that the scheme goes swimmingly for all the good people of Glasgow.

A People’s Bank

Issued by The People’s Bank of Govanhill, the concept is the brainchild of the artist in residence at the baths. The scheme is run in conjunction with the Turner Prize to encourage visitors to local art events. The non bank notes will be available at an exchange booth between October and January and can be spent at local shops. Already the notes can be used to buy coffee, bread, books and clothes in a number of Glasgow shops.

Don’t Worry- We Still Accept the Scottish Pound

Well you’ll be really relieved to know we still accept good old Scottish pounds and that with our fantastic saving across a number of terrific ranges those pounds can go a lot further at the moment; and you’ll need rather fewer of them to get something good.

Try for example TIARA our delightful hand cut crystal range and at half price it shouldn’t be missed. And for a short period of time it comes packaged in a lovely lighter blue box.
