Scotland Sees Northern Lights - Get Lit Up on Skye

Well you know when you’ve spent a deal of money on a coat and see the same coat worn by someone that you know and they bought it for a fiver in the charity shop, well that’s a tiny bit of how I feel having just been to the Arctic to see the Northern Lights when they were seen last night from Scotland and Northern Ireland to Cornwall and Kent. Well you’ve all seen the magical lights now I hope, but if not this evening will be good for the lights too! The picture I have posted here was taken with a 5 second exposure on a moving ship.

The good old Met Office said the sightings of the rare aurora borealis in the south in the UK on Sunday night were due to the extra clear skies and the strength of a geomagnetic storm. Now after chasing the lights up and down the coast of Norway we saw them about five or six times, including one time when we were riding Icelandic horses on the beach of Lofoten Island in the dead of the Arctic night with the constellations wheeling over our heads. Starry, starry night, indeed! But without seeing the lights through a camera the colours were never truly green, and then there they pop up green as anything back home.

The light show known as an aurora borealis, is usually most visible near the Earth’s magnetic north and south poles when high-speed electrically charged particles from space collide with gas molecules in Earth’s upper atmosphere. Not in the UK, so it was a magical time for many.

There is a live map of the aurora that is available online and it was shown every day on the ship and an alert was sounded every time the lights were visible. This self same live map modelling the movement of the aurora is showing a strong probability for some of northern Scotland, including the Shetland Islands getting a good show of the aurora. Last night many spectators shared spectacular images on social media showing the Aurora. Lucky I say.
