For Special People

There is a tiny speck of rock 230 miles or 370km west of North Uist. It’s way out in the middle of nowhere in the ocean and it’s called Rockall, and indeed there is rock-all there. But it attracts adventurers who want to break the 45 day record for living on that tiny speck of granite. Just above the water level, Rockall is only 100ft or 30m wide and 70ft or 21m long that’s a lot smaller than most gardens and a good wave could wash you off the rock. To stay there you and your equipment must be lashed to the stone. And living beside the sea myself I can testify to the power of the waves.

The latest steely adventurer, Cam Cameron, a former Gordon Highlander was trying for a record breaking 60 days on Rockall before terrifying weather called an end to the quest, which was aimed at making money for veteran’s charities.  The poor man’s tent was ripped to shreds by gale force winds and he was forced to abandon the record attempt. Some 10 hours after he made his distress call the rescue helicopter from Stornoway was able to lift him off.

It seems that the weather had been absolutely awful and not even a fishing boat was seen for the last two weeks of the time the adventurer was marooned on the islet. But Mr Cameron was never bored as the spectacular marine and bird life more than made up for the lack of a telly or human company, but he knew he was in some trouble with bad weather when the many birds common to that speck of rock just totally disappeared.
