Exciting New Discovery - World's Earliest Football Pitch is in ....

In the week when a major supermarket has recalled my favourite sausages it is nice to have a fun story to report. There is news that shows that the world’s first purpose made football ground was in Scotland! As you might know the rules of football are jointly owned by the four home nations and they are leased to the bad boys of UEFA , so what was called compelling evidence about the origins of fooba  from the 17th century is kind of striking.

Yes that’s from the 1600s.  That’s even earlier than the Bonnie Prince Charlie era of my favourite time travelling saga Outlander. We have just started re-watching the series at tea time and are still loving the travails of Jamie and Claire. But back to the news that archaeologists have discovered evidence of the world’s oldest football pitch near Gatehouse of Fleet near the Solway Firth. And of course the football supporters of the nation are anxious to prove that the noble game originated north of the border, not  to the south!  However, I am aware however that other nations make a claim to the sport too. A certain bald gentleman in Italy  during the 1920s wouldn’t allow the sport to be called football so in Italy it’s called Calcio after a version of the game played in the Middle Ages. But for the moment we can say it is entirely possible that modern football originated in Anwoth, in Kirkcudbrightshire. It’s a  new fun thought!

And if you want to discover something new with fun results might I point you in the direction of James Pirie’s special offers. They are legion. And although we don’t have roots back to the 17th century we were founded in 1890 and have a proud tradition of value for money.
