Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns
The history of Easter eggs dates back to before Christian times when painted eggs were regarded as symbols of regeneration, with the chick emerging from the egg and the beginning of spring. So it was natural that after the first Easter the egg would become part of the Christian tradition. Hot cross buns are of course symbols of the cross and the old rhyme has lasted centuries, this one from 1733 as a street cry.
