Does Taylor Swift Have Anything to Do with Father's Day?

Switfties are up and at it. The fans of the immensely popular Taylor Swift are about to get Swiftified as the star kicks off her Eras tour of these isles with three nights at Murrayfield stadium in Edinburgh. The city is agog with excitement  and I am told that fans are draining their bank accounts to buy Swift merchandise. And each night almost 73,000 fans will fill the Scottish Rugby home ground.

Taylor is 34 years old. She is from an affluent background and originally from Pennsylvania spending her early years on a Christmas tree farm and summers on the beach. She decided to become a country and western singer when she watched a documentary about Faith Hill, I hope it was my documentary! I made one called Faithfully Yours quite a long time ago.  I remember spending a lot of time in Nashville making it. Taylor was a young prodigy and has been in the business since 2008. I also did the first documentary on another star baby Britney Spears when I was in Louisiana, I wonder what happened to her?

Taylor Swift is known to have a business head on her shoulders and she re-recorded all her early albums to take back the copyright on her popular tunes. In America owning the masters of a recording gives the owner all kinds of rights we wouldn’t allow in Europe. And now Taylor is a billionaire and like Beyoncé she brings an economic boom to wherever she plays. I met Ms Knowles-Carter and her hubby Jay-Z very fleetingly once and all I can say is she’s very petite for 5 ft 7.

But those Swifties draining their bank account should give a thought to Father’s day  just around the corner on June 16th and at time when we  are celebrating the achievements of  not of  showbiz veterans, but real life heroes in n Normandy there is also a time to remember the everyday achievements of our own time. They may be a bit more prosaic , the cup  of tea or coffee in the morning, the emptying of the bins, driving you to a Taylor Swift concert and the hard slog of the garden, but we should value them all.

So while the rest of the world is going Taylor Swift and election crazy, we here at James Pirie are just getting on with the business of supplying your gifts with a smile and a tub full of efficiency.
