Come into the Light in 2026 - Winter Goodies
It’s that time of year. Shetland is back on the telly and the nights are slowly, slowly getting lighter, but the weather is foul and for a change it is freezing rather than pelting down with rain while the wind howls. The lack of light in the north is serious problem for the populations of these far flung regions, but the Orkney Islands are helping folks with SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder caused by the lack of sunlight at this time of year. And all this is through their local library where you can borrow a “Box of Light.” SAD is a pretty real thing and it affects about a million people a year across the UK. Where I was in Sweden a town called Luleå a long time ago it didn’t get light much in the winter and it was almost always light at the height of the summer. Both thoroughly confused my body clock.
If you are an Orkney resident you can pop to the library and put your name down to borrow one of these light kits, which are proving very popular indeed. Did you know the Orkney public library is the oldest in Scotland and it has a mobile unit called Booky McBookFace which also carries the light box. Up north there is a measly six hours of daylight in the winter and there is only so much time you can spend perusing the great James Pirie online offering so the anti-SAD lights are good therapeutic aides in these darkest of days. Light is our friend and the library is to be congratulated on making these kits available for free to the locals and part of a research project from the University of Glasgow.
And what is also your friend is the aforementioned James Pirie WINTER SALE which offers great service, fine products and highly affordable prices.
