Not a Native Species

It was the stuff of nightmares when cleaner Gordon Fraser found a four-foot-long anaconda on an Edinburgh street. Poor Gordon thought at first it was a children’s toy, but when the toy moved he called the Scottish SPCA to Pilton Bank.

A Snake Called William

The yellow anaconda, nicknamed William, taken to the charity’s Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Balerno after Gordon took pity on the snake, which seemed in wretched condition and defied advice to pick him up and save him.

In the Edinburgh Urban Jungle?

The monster sized snake was lying behind some cardboard next to a fence, but it was obviously suffering in the cool Scottish weather. Anacondas usually spend a lot of time in warm jungle waters of the Amazon sweltering in tropical heat, so it isn’t surprising that the snake now called William wasn’t faring well.

Will O’ the Wisp

In fact yellow anacondas often bite, so Gordon was lucky that William was so far gone in his dehydration and exhaustion. Nobody knows where William came from, or whether he was abandoned or had escaped his owner, but the SPCA will continue to nurse him back to full health and perhaps one day he will reach the full anaconda length of 20 ft. We hope he doesn’t go wandering in Pilton Bank then.

Our Own South American Offering

Rather more cuddly and friendlier than yellow anacondas are alpacas relatives of the llama from the Andes. These beautifully sculpted creatures are new this year so we can’t give you a huge discount to help you own these wondrous animals, but even so we have them on special offer just now. And they are called Border Fine Arts - Hembra & Cria (Brown) and they are part of a lovely limited edition.
