Mackintosh’s unique talent was  that he could make something new out of the existing, without losing his delight in ornament and decoration. One critic said ‘With his pursuit of the “modern”, his love of the old, and his obsessive individuality, he was one of the last and one of the greatest of the Victorians.’

Glasgow School of Art in Flames

When his design the Glasgow School of Art went up in flames before a fire prevention system could be finished we lost much of a joyful building. Since then the chairman of the Friends of the Glasgow School of Art, has opposed the exact building of the Library on the grounds that it will be a ‘Mockintosh copy’ and thus an ‘embarrassment’.  So future generations will not see the building as it was in its glory days.
