If you want to know how we came to think about wedding anniversaries you have to go back deep in history to the Holy Roman Empire, when after 25 years husbands crowned their wives with a silver wreath and on their 50th with a gold wreath.

These days you might get receive a message from the Queen for 60th, 65th, and 70th wedding anniversaries, and any wedding anniversary after that. But you have to write and ask for it, they don’t keep a database of when they fall. It’s just like when there is a 100th birthday, you get the telemessage, but only if you ask for it. It doesn’t have the same ring as a telegram.

In the United States, a couple can receive a greeting from the President for any wedding anniversary on or after the 50th one.
