Scottish Bees Go Short

Vandals have deprived Highland bees of their supper in a move described locally as ‘senseless.’  The bees belong to Struan Apiaries, a family run business, in the Highlands who make blossom and heather honey and have hives all over the north. The vandals opened up a valve on a giant syrup store and emptied it over the road causing a bridge to be closed for a sticky clear up. The incident happened near Conon Bridge in the Highlands.

Scottish Weather Real Villain

This summer’s poor weather was the reason for the storage of the syrup, because the bees weren’t able to forage for sufficient pollen to build up reserves in the hive. So worker bees and the queens will need to eat the syrup to get through the long Scottish winter. The loss of this enormous amount of nourishment was a blow to honey production when about 200 gallons of the amber nectar was lost.
