A Robin Redbreast in a Cage

Campaign Sees New National Bird
The choice of National Bird for Britain has gone to our old friend the Robin. A nationwide vote saw more than 200,000 people choose the robin as Britain's national bird after it swooped away with 34 . It was by far the most popular bird with 34 per cent of the vote.
The Robin is well known for its strident wee call and aggressive nature when faced with intruders on its home turf. It has a red breast for a very territorial reason.
Winner is Robin
A campaign to name the country's national bird was launched by ornithologist David Lindo, reaching schools and many of us on line.
But Second is the Beautiful Barn Owl
In second place was the beautiful barn owl, with 12 per cent of the vote, with the Blackbird in third place. Lindo began the project last year when he realised Britain did not have a national bird, unlike countries such as India, France and Japan. Mr Lindo said: "The robin is Britain's most familiar bird so it's perhaps fitting that it has been chosen by the nation to be our national bird.
