A Favourite Returns
Are you fond of a re-boot? The much loved All Creatures Great and Small, referred to by farmers I know as All Creatures Grunt and Smell, has had a successful re-launch on Channel 5. And of course it was about a doughty Scot and the travails of life south of the Border, but amongst the wonder of the Yorkshire Dales. These days re-dos tend to be one of the succession of Marvel Films re-booted from the franchise as the corporate giants mine the salt mines of minor super heroes.
But one re-heating of an idea might well be your cup of tea, or a dram of entertainment, and that is the much loved series Monarch of the Glen which last aired in 2005, but these day can still be found on the BBC iPlayer. The series was based on one of my all time favourite’s work, Compton Mackenzie and his Highland Novels. I devoured his work at the local library when I was lad. Whisky Galore remains one of my all time favourites, but all of his work is worth a read. Much of it is still hilarious.
The new series on Channel 5 is made by the original production company and it is set to be an initial six parter which follows the return of Isla Campbell to a rundown wreck of an estate after a hotshot career in the law in London after a family death. She’s expecting to be done and dusted in a few days, but the property is deep in a morass of debt with a brother who refuses to budge from the ancestral home. Naturally the scenery is going to be fantastic, though I am informed that some parts of the show will be filmed in Northern Ireland where the tax breaks are humongous. Isla and her brother spend the TV series fighting the marauding banks as they try and foreclose on their old family home. Phyllis Logan is one of my missus’s favourite actors and she’s set to have a major part. The TV series will air, as they say, next year.
