The Bear Necessities

I’m just back from a break from the dreich, but no sooner am I back than airplanes can’t land because of high winds and the entire rail network of Scotland closes down.  It’s not a great advertisement for life in these isles, but for some it’s a grand place to come.  On of those is a bit hairy! There’s a large Ukrainian brown bear that’s found a haven here. The poor beast had been traumatised and wounded when those pesky Russians started shelling the zoo it lived in. But now thanks to the tireless efforts of helpful people in the nation the bear has been re-homed to his new place in Scotland. It’s been quite a week for re-homing indeed, when sweary parrots are also in the news. The little tinkers were at a wildlife park and they had been sent for rehabilitation to new flocks, but it seems it is all in vain and the best the park can do is to warn people of the foul mouthed avians.

Yampil, a 12-year-old Asiatic black bear, has no such speech impediment to warn the public about, but he is a little nervous after being a survivor of the Russian the attack in the Donetsk region of Ukraine. He’s spent a little time in Belgium, but he wasn’t happy there for long and he’s found his “forever home” in West Lothian where he will share the zoo with 160 other species. The zoo specialises in rescuing bears and has a number of brown bears. The zoo’s website tells is that they have rescued six different bears to Scotland. Carmen, Suzy and Peggy were elderly bears who’d spent their years in a circus, the last of whom died in 2019. Then Henk and Eso who used to “amuse” customers at traffic stop café came next. Then came Byara the bear and now the Ukrainian refugee  Yampil. Welcome!
