Sir Andy's Gift

It’s well known that Great Scot Sir Andy Murray is generous of himself, his time and his purse and recently he demonstrated just how generous he is. After his fabulous career in tennis where he might well have been our greatest ever sportsman after winning three Grand Slam titles, two Olympic gold medals and a silver, without ever being the best naturally talented player in the world. Now he’s taken up golf with the zeal that made his tennis shine and he’s heading towards a scratch handicap at a rate of knots. Just a little way a go he was at a handicap of 7, but within weeks he was on 3.7.  But fierce competitor that he is he is also a fine human being. Andy was playing in a memorial golf tournament this week when his generosity was well to the fore.

The competition was for a sports journalist’s association to commemorate the life of a long time tennis correspondent for a newspaper I myself don’t read. It was a foggy, misty morning in Hertfordshire, so not so far from Andy’s family home and he drove his golf ball like a demon. Indeed he won the longest drive award for a monumental strike on the 493 par five 9th hole. The son of the late journalist was also playing and in a warm gesture Sir Andy donated his prize to the son of the late journalist who had hit the second longest drive. That’s a fine gesture I say.
