Seagrass Fairy Circles off Barra and Bargains off James Pirie
If you have a decent lawn like me you may be upset if a “Fairy Circle” appears because it is normally a sign of fungus infestation and that’s no welcome anywhere. I’ve looked up what to do about such circles in my lawn but really it’s all to no avail. You see we are abandoning our lovely sea front house and moving to a town house without a garden, only a view of the canal and open fields. Everyone says we are mad as we have a view of the sea from every room at the back of the house. It is magic, but even magic has its day. Last Saturday I sold the sea kayaks to some lovely ladies who will enjoy them greatly.
So when I heard that the seagrass “Fairy Circles” had been found beneath the waves in the Western Isles just off Barra I was tickled pink. It’s so much nicer than fungus infesting a lawn. Now this is not normal seagrass behaviour as this sea plant usually grows in thick forests or ’meadows’ as they call it. Once upon a time it was so plentiful folks used to thatch their roofs with the stuff. They are vital for nature as they provide cover for fish to hide in and act as a sink for carbon dioxide, helping fight global warming. And like lots of the natural world the plants are suffering. But for the moment these nautical “Fairy Circles” are doing a great job attracting attention to Barra and they have been avidly looked at across the globe.
