The papers are full of the Queen revealing her joy at having a new great-granddaughter following the arrival of Princess Charlotte on Saturday May 2 this year.  Her Majesty is reported as confiding in guests at a Buckingham Palace garden party saying that she “loved” having another girl in the family

Royal Baby

The royal baby was born at the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, west London. But she isn’t the first Princess Charlotte.  The original, Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was also born in May, but in 1744.

The First Princess Charlotte

She married King George III of England, just a few hours after meeting him for the first time. Since the time of the Hanovers the names George and Charlotte have been popular with the royal family.  The original Princess was not a beauty, but was full of grace and loved her man.

A Patroness of Botany

Charlotte was a patroness of the arts and a keen amateur botanist and, during the 1770s, she acquired a small house called Queen Charlotte’s Cottage in Kew Gardens. When George III developed his very long standing illness it was here that she retreated.
