Orkney's Favourite Pilot Retires
Do you enjoy your job, is your profession a life’s work? A certain pilot who has just retired from flying to Orkney can answer in the affirmative after 21 years of island hopping for Loganair. Not only did the flyer enjoy the scenery he loved the chit and chat to the passengers which enlivened the short hops where he was both pilot and crew. Sometimes he a was also the baggage handler too.
The flights were made in the Britten-Norman Islander airplane which is ideally suited to the short hops the routes demand. The pilot also became a bit of movie star when he landed a part in the Hollywood film The Outrun which starred the Irish actor Saoirse Ronan, who in my newspaper days I had the pleasure of interviewing, but she was so much younger then back then. The air link is of course a vital part of the island’s connectivity with the mainland and no doubt the next pilot will enjoy the job of lifetime too.
