Lord of The Isles Found Not Kilty
Tongues have been wagging about the Lord of the Isles, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew and the heir to Scottish Throne. In case you don’t know they are all the same man, Prince William and the tongues have been saying that the royal has an allergy to the kilt and highland dress. The tartan kilt, jacket, sporran and sgian dubh is a visual demonstration of the much loved heritage of the nation. The 41 year old Prince hasn’t been seen in public in a kilt since he was a small boy, despite wearing all kinds of clobber and uniforms in the course of his duties, including plumes of ostrich feathers, bows and ribbons and a cap with an embroidered leek. But of the noble kilt not a jot. Perhaps somebody should make a kilt out of chinos for the Great Steward of Scotland, his favourite garb. His father meanwhile is often seen in the kilt, perhaps it’s because he has the knees for it! And his grandmother, the late lamented Queen was more often in a kilt north of the border than not.
There are kilt makers lining up to provide the Prince with the national dress allowing him to reach out to a younger generation of Scots, even kilt makers with the much sought after Royal Warrant are ready to get cutting and sewing. Indeed as we are in the middle of the wedding season in the nation the cult of the kilt is much in evidence across this northern realm. Now William went to university in Scotland, where he met Kate Middleton, but for his graduation he avoided the kilt with white bow tie and black gown. When he got wed William was decked out in the uniform of the Irish Guards. For the coronation earlier this year he was dressed in the ceremonial dress of a colonel in the Welsh Guards, but not a whiff of a kilt! While the King is a big supporter of Scottish crafts and his own kilts are 100% from the nation.
