The New Time Man

Dundee Man is New Voice of the Speaking Clock

Alan Steadman, 69, a retired civil servant from Dundee is the new voice of BT’s speaking clock saw his name displayed on London’s BT Tower. His voice will be the first non English since the speaking clock was first introduced way back in 1936.

Fifth Voice of the Service

Alan had is appointment made public on the BBC’s The One Show after a competition to find a new voice to mark the service’s 80th anniversary. Steadman is only the fifth permanent voice to give the time “at the third stroke” on the 123 line.

Millions Use It

Some 12 million calls are made to the clock each year, especially on Remembrance Day or at New Year’s Eve. This is down on the hundreds of millions of calls made a year before the days of mobile phones and the internet.

Now For Something Completely Different

Previous voices have included the Sara Mendes da Costa, actor Brian Cobby, used from 1985 to 2007, Pat Simmons, a London telephone exchange supervisor, from 1963 to 1985, and Jane Cain, from Croydon, Surrey, the original voice of “TIM” who was a member of Perth Repertory Theatre Company, from 1936 to 1963.

The Gift of Time

The gift of time is great one and with these dateless designs, I wouldn’t be so foolish to call them ‘timeless’ I can guarantee you’ll get a warm reception. They are all great pieces and have money to be saved on all of them. Don’t say i never point you in the right direction for a bargain.
