Queen Kept Busy Sending Centenarians Special Messages
Just after the news that the Japanese government has downgraded the sake cup the Emperor sends to every 100 year old Japanese citizen comes the news that there are now a massive 900 Scots who are over a 100 years old. Recently the Japanese government ended the tradition, quite a new one since 1073, of giving centenarians a silver commemorative gift, because the growing elderly population has made it too expensive.
Do Not For Sake Oh My Darling
The government have given the silver sake cups, each costing around £40 to thank the centenarians for their contribution to Japanese society, but the old gals and geezers have been costing the state more than a million a year, well £1.3m to be precise. And in the present cost cutting environment the gift is proving too costly As a result, they want to replace the gift with something less pricey. Options being considered include using cheaper materials or choosing something completely different to mark the occasion - possibly just a letter of congratulations just like the ones from our own dear queen.
Scottish Centenarian Numbers Growing Exponentially
There were more than 29,000 new centenarians in Japan last year, compared to 153 when the scheme began in 1973. Meanwhile in Scotland the number has doubled in the last 10 years, but it is still below a 1,000 in 2016. Figures released by the National Records of Scotland show that last year there were 900 centenarians living in Scotland, an increase of 67 per cent from 540 ten years before. The overwhelming majority were women who accounted for 780 of those passing the milestone. With improved care and nutrition the numbers are set to reach even higher over the coming years and whereas once upon a time the idea of someone living to this ripest of ripe old ages was rare, it is relatively common now as these new figures reveal.
